The Chromatic Series
A study in movement rather than destination, Cerulean Drift captures the quiet choreography of water, atmosphere, and light. Layers of translucent cobalt and cerulean flow through the vessel in sweeping currents, suspended within crystal-clear borosilicate to create an illusion of depth that extends beyond the physical form.
The composition invites slow observation. Wisps of pale blue coil through darker currents like mist carried across open water, while subtle cellular formations emerge and dissolve beneath the surface. Depending on the light, the vessel shifts between the clarity of a glacial sea, the layered atmosphere of a distant planet, and the soft turbulence of clouds viewed from above.
Part of the Chromatic Series, this work explores color as the primary subject. Tidal Geometry explores the tension between deliberate structure and the natural movement of molten glass. Deep cobalt blue, opaque white, and restrained black flow through the vessel in broad, uninterrupted fields, forming sweeping contours that shift between fluid abstraction and almost architectural symmetry.
At opposing points in the composition, the colors tighten into concentric spirals before opening into larger waves that travel through the body of the piece. From one perspective they resemble vortices seen across water; from another, the spiraling arms and deep blue interior suggest astronomical forms. The white passages provide stark negative space, allowing the cobalt to appear suspended within the surrounding glass rather than simply applied to its surface.
Created using the distinctive process developed for the Chromatic Series, the colored glass is formed and manipulated as a continuous composition before being incorporated into the finished vessel. This preserves broad areas of uninterrupted movement and allows the boundaries between colors to stretch, curve, and migrate naturally as the glass is worked entirely by hand in the flame.
The result is a piece whose geometry is never entirely geometric and whose fluidity is never entirely accidental. Rotation continually changes the composition: spirals become waves, waves become branching forms, and seemingly separate patterns reveal themselves as portions of one continuous field.
Tidal Geometry captures one of the central ideas of the Chromatic Series—the moment when controlled color and molten movement cease to be separate things and become a single visual language.
Plasma Field captures a moment of apparent energy suspended within glass. Deep ruby red and black borders frame a complex central passage of hand-mixed color, creating a dramatic transition from controlled geometry into fluid, almost chaotic movement.
Within the clear encasement, multiple colors merge and transform into translucent membranes, luminous filaments, cellular openings, and sweeping currents. Cool blues and violets dominate the field, interrupted by flashes of green, rose, and warmer tones that appear and disappear as the piece is turned and viewed under changing light.
The resulting imagery evokes ionized matter in motion—a turbulent plasma field of branching currents and glowing structures seemingly captured at the instant of formation. Fine lines stretch across deeper pools of color while irregular openings create an impression of depth extending well beyond the surface of the glass.
From a distance, Plasma Field presents a bold composition of ruby, black, and luminous blue. Up close, that simplicity gives way to an intricate internal landscape whose patterns emerged through the interaction of color, heat, and movement. The result is a singular composition that cannot be precisely repeated.
Meridian explores structure, balance, and interruption through a deliberately restrained palette of saturated cobalt blue, luminous white, and narrow bands of black. Unlike the more fluid, swirling compositions of much of the Chromatic Series, this vessel organizes color into broad horizontal fields, giving the piece an almost architectural presence.
The cobalt sections possess subtle variations of density and movement beneath their seemingly uniform surfaces—evidence of glass that has been worked and formed by hand rather than simply applied as flat bands of color. Between them, the central field of white creates a luminous visual pause, while thin black boundaries sharply define the transition from one region to the next.
Viewed from above, the composition changes completely. The linear geometry of the exterior resolves into concentric circles, revealing how each band continues uninterrupted around the vessel. What appears rectilinear from the side becomes radial from above, allowing the same construction to express two different geometries depending upon the viewer's perspective.
Created through the hand-formed, layered approach characteristic of the Chromatic Series, Meridian reduces that process to its essential elements: color, proportion, boundary, and form.
